This is a new coat that can be matched with both Japanese and Western styles.
The design is based on the Japanese-style coat "Tonbi." It was originally a cloak worn in Scotland (Inverness region), but its large armholes made it a perfect match for Japanese clothing, and it became very popular during the Meiji period.
The cape can be removed and used as a shawl (suitable for women), or the body can be worn as a long vest.
The pattern is a detailed print of the etiquette pattern found in Edo Komon Sanyaku.
The photo shows both the dull gray and soot brown colors, but the difference is so subtle that it is difficult to distinguish them in the photograph.
